Greetings,
My husband and I decided to start a blog where we could post our thoughts and ideas on topics close to our hearts. Since between us we are interested in a variety of subjects, as varied as Mathematics, Philosophy, Poetry and Creative Writing, Sufism or even Economics, we felt a blog would be a suitable place to ‘rest’ our ideas in a reasonably disciplined fashion. This is also a space for posting some of our previous articles, published and unpublished, mainly on the topic of (alternative) education. This week, we are linking an article on mathematics, nature and learning by Ashna. Click on this for the complete write up: http://www.journal.kfionline. org/article.asp?issue=11& article=4
Since we are both new to the blog writing world, I’m sure we will learn as we go along, improving our writing and ‘blog-style’ and hopefully mastering the art of posting and pasting various titbits that capture our imagination. Some posts will be written by Ashna, some by Brian and some by both.
A few words about the title of our blog ‘philomathesis’. In ancient Greek, the spring from which the course of modern thought flows, "philo" means love, particularly the love found in friendship and dialogue. “Mathesis” means learning, specifically what is learnable as being drawn out of the depths of one’s self through recollection of truth. Perhaps more than anything, ceaseless learning and teaching is our passion, and philomathesis is love of learning in the broadest sense. We have gone back to the Greek roots out of a conviction that the modern world has lost its way in the endless glittering corridors of technological development. Philomathesis is an attempt to learn and teach in a fashion that touches the original source of technological civilization, and rethink its founding principles in that light.
